Leadership Outside of Time

Have you ever thought: “Remember the good old days?” Or, “I wish it could stay this way forever!” How about, “It will be better in the future!” Many have entertained these thoughts. Dwelling on just one of these three concepts, however, renders us ineffectual leaders. Leaders do need to appreciate the past, embrace the present, and plan for the future. All three viewpoints are essential to successful leadership; leadership that steps back and gets a “big picture” view. That is, leadership outside of time. Robert Greenleaf, in his book Servant Leadership, describes it as “…past, present, and future are one, bracketed together and moving along as the clock ticks…regarding the events of the instant moment and constantly comparing them with a series of projections made in the past and at the same time projecting future events…” Be a better leader by learning to lead outside of time. Here’s how:

Appreciate the past, the people who shaped it, and let people know you do. Avoid referring to the past in extremes—either good or bad. Communicate humility to learn from past mistakes (yours or others’), and true gratefulness for success. This demonstrates ability to discern useful meaning from history.

Embrace the present. Take time to listen to your colleagues, so that you can understand the present reality from the point of view of those who are shaping it. Combine this input with an awareness of circumstances—both internal and external to your organization. Good communication coupled with your knowledge of the current operating climate helps you lead with the confidence and support of colleagues.

Plan for the future. With the past and present in view, strategically plan for a positive future. This means investing time with colleagues to dialog about possible scenarios (so the future doesn’t catch you off guard!), highlight and implement best practices for reaching goals, and commit together to a strategic plan to accomplish your purpose. Meet the future confidently through strategic planning. Remember, failing to plan is planning to fail!

Keep the past, present, and future in full view as you lead. Enjoy success as you lead outside of time—“big picture” thinking for positive results.
